| Project Description | Project Description: Training Center for Global Development, Rajasthan educates activists and leaders at different levels to serve in their respective communities as partners in the striving for development and progress. And the Institute also specifically trains young to become leaders of their progressive human community. Training Center for Global Development is a goldmine of human resources. We have found an inexhaustible source of human resources in the rural youth in India. Over the last 4 years we have trained 175 girls and boys, basically from rural Rajasthan, Orissa and Tamil Nadu, through a specially designed Development Instructor program at Training Center for Global Development. The youth have enrolled for a 13 month Development Instructor program, in order to train themselves to take up challenges of leading development initiatives in connection with Humana People to People India’s activities. As a result of the training we can see that out of the 209 people enrolling, 114 are graduated successfully form TCGD. Out of them, only 41=24% had regular employment when enrolled, where as 108 = 95% have employment after the training and that 99 = 87% continue to work in the development sector. These numbers are in themselves pretty impressive and when we add to that the quality and quantity of the work which the Development Instructors have been capable of getting done over the last few years, we have to admit that we have even impressed ourselves. In the last chapter of this concept paper we will show you some examples of what kind of work the Development Instructors do after ended training in order to try to give you an impression of the depth and quality of this program. The Development Instructor program is about: Realizing the prevailing conditions in the country Reacting to it and Formulating actions to be taken Making all the detailed plans All aspects of money, budget, cash flow, accounting Reporting and documentation of all the good things happening Structure of the training: Action Period. 6 months Residential Training Practical and theoretical project implementation Discussions and deliberations about which kind of development we want to promote Studies and discussions of local, national and global reality Motto: Get yourself in shape for a new lifestyle Project Period. 6 months with individual responsibility in one of HPPI’s projects Every Development Instructor in charge of achieving the defined development goals and putting his/her own mark on the project Motto: Persistent focus on goals and results leads to a change Camp Future. 1 month residential training back at the institute More refined and practical discussions and deliberations on basis of the experiences in the group. Motto: Reflect and define your future Elements of the Development Instructor Program Realizing the prevailing conditions in the country It is a Chinese saying that: The only way to know the taste of an apple is to eat it. Actually that also goes for knowing the prevailing conditions. The best way to know your country is to change it. Take a bite and you will know more about the reality on the ground. This small anecdote will explain how that goes: The first team of DI’s were not very familiar with the HIV virus. Once they has learned the facts of the virus and the following AIDS disease, they went out in the local villages and held meetings explaining the people about the disease, how it spreads and how to avoid it. They brought condoms and made demonstrations of the same. We had learned from experienced people working for years with informing about HIV/AIDS that we had to go slow. This is India, and it is a very sensitive topic. The local Development Instructors had made their own plans and ways of informing people. They were very direct and came straight to the point. Knowing how the virus spread and how to avoid it they felt an obligation to share their knowledge, and there by save people from getting infected with this fatal virus. The DI’s afterwards admitted that they were scared stiff first time they made a condom demonstration, but once they found that people were more interested in the facts of how to avoid the disease than to protect old stigma they relaxed. Actually it was overwhelming how much support and thanks they got from people in the villages. This very straight forward approach has been a trademark for the Development Instructors ever since. And we see that the Chinese saying was right. We changed our perception of the prevailing conditions by taking a bite of the apple. In this case we found less resistance than expected. Solving conflicts and making people meet Yet another topic which is essential for creating development. This noble art is being practiced both in solving problems and conflicts at the team as well as on village level where all kinds of problems are brought out in the open for ventilation and anti dusting and for finding satisfying compromises for the involved parties. Very often we find problems about sharing common goods like wells or educational facilities. Shoulder to shoulder with people in trouble Be it economical problems, health problems or cultural problems, such as female feticide, traditions of only educating boys etc. This respectful and dignified approach is carrying the beautiful fruit of development, releasing potentials and powers previously hidden in traditional and feudal dust. All aspects of money The Development Instructors have learned that money makes the world go round. It is not enough to have a good idea and good intentions. As a part of the training the DI’s fundraise for their own training. They practice accounting, both for minor projects and for the running of the training centre. They learn to make budgets, cash flows and to use them as a tool for their project implementation. Reporting and documentation Reporting is an integral part of the training. Every week they make plans and week reports. After every action they submit reports. They have to define development parameters and evaluate the impact and effect of their community actions. Success of a Development Instructor Development Instructors from Behror started Academy for Working Children (AWC). It all started with two DI’s finding lots of migrant and gipsy children roaming around. They interviewed 75 children and wrote their case stories. Most of the children expressed that they really wanted an education to be able to read and write. They opened a school in the basement of TCGD, but none of the 75 children they had interviewed came. They visited them again in their homes and once again they all promised to come. A result of this last attempt was that all their younger sisters and brothers came escorted by a few responsible children. Today 17 centres are educating 1200 children, basically with very little funds available, all supported by good people in the local community. In many places the parents have started to show up for literacy classes in the evening. Basically we provide 1-3 class education and after this training many children have gained so much self confidence that they have started to attend the mainstream education. |
